This paper contends that Europe’s insistence on tying efforts to de-escalate the Syrian civil war to a transition process to remove Bashar al-Assad is counterproductive. Indeed, the text´s author suggests that after six years of brutal conflict in Syria, it’s clear that Assad will remain in power for the foreseeable future. So what approach should European states adopt instead? Our author suggests that the answer may involve focusing on establishing a viable national political arrangement in Syria, potentially even before the implementation of sustainable ceasefires.
