Escorting UN missions in Mali, which is primarily being done by African soldiers who lack adequate training, equipment and support, is a highly dangerous task. According to this brief, the leaders of the UN stabilization mission in Mali (MINUSMA) should address the problem by 1) investing in local infrastructure; 2) improving the coordination between the mission’s European and African contingents; and 3) building greater capacity within MINUSMA.
