This backgrounder takes stock of the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which is a three-country accord adopted by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States in January 1994. In particular, the text’s author explains 1) how NAFTA fits into broader debates about trade policy around the globe; 2) how the Agreement has affected the American, Mexican and Canadian economies; and 3) whether the pact might be renegotiated in the future.
