This text challenges the European Commission’s decision to grant Gazprom greater access to the Opal natural gas pipeline. As the paper’s author sees it, the EC’s controversial decision is largely based on an incorrect interpretation of EU legislation that centers on ‘security of supply.’ While the EC insists that the decision will enhance both security and competition within the natural gas industry, the author argues that the new arrangement threatens current projects that seek to diversify supply sources and reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian gas.
