This backgrounder 1) traces the origins of the Colombian government’s conflict with the country’s rebels, and 2) identifies what’s needed to sustain the late-2016 peace agreement between the three parties. While exploring these broader points, the backgrounder’s authors also review 1) the history and ideology of the FARC and the National Liberation Army (ELN); 2) the kidnappings, acts of terror and drug trafficking carried out by the FARC; 3) the efforts by the US and President Alvaro Uribe’s administration to tackle Colombia’s guerrilla violence; and 4) the process that led to the 2016 peace agreement.
