This backgrounder reviews the long-lasting defense ties between the US and Philippines. In particular, the text’s author explains 1) how the relationship between the two countries evolved from conflict to partnership in the first half of the 20th century; 2) the security relationship which developed after WWII, which eventually soured because of the socio-political friction created by US military bases situated in the Philippines; and 3) the recently revived security ties between the two countries, which are largely attributable to the rise of China.
