This report looks at how the military and the social sciences can develop mutually beneficial relations with one another. More specifically, the text’s author examines 1) Australia’s strategic environment and current Australian Defence Force operations; 2) how developments within the Australian armed forces highlight the need for a framework that can facilitate cooperation between the Australian military and social sciences; 3) the significance of cultural knowledge and ethics in the social sciences; 4) the history of military-social science relations; and 5) lessons learned from US efforts to involve the social sciences in military operations.
