This backgrounder reviews how the Chinese government regulates the country’s media, to include the degree it permits freedom of the press. The text’s authors particularly look at 1) the bodies and methods the Chinese government employs to monitor, censor and control media within its borders; 2) the measures it takes to influence the foreign press; 3) how it has prevented US media technology firms from competing within China; and 4) how the Chinese public circumvent the country’s censors.
