This paper reflects on the state of US-Russian relations both before and after the 2016 US Presidential election, focusing particularly on the impact of Donald Trump’s Presidency on lingering tensions between the two counties. Contrary to initial hopes that Trump’s victory might lead to improved bilateral engagement, the text’s author maintains that Trump’s political weakness and anarchic tendencies point to further destabilization in future ties. Indeed, given the volatile nature of the international environment, the author also argues that the chances of a direct US-Russia confrontation have increased significantly.
