This brief contemplates Boko Haram’s growing presence in northern Cameroon and the broader problems it exposes within the country. The latter include 1) the institutional vulnerabilities of the nation’s far north, and 2) the power vacuum that will occur with the death of 84-year old Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon for 35 years. Given these factors and more, the brief’s author recommends specific ways to stabilize the country and promote greater humanitarian engagement.
