The author of this commentary looks at the ramifications of the April 2017 constitutional referendum in Turkey. The latter 1) codified the de facto power President Erdogan already held; 2) signaled a deep internal political transformation towards a New Turkey; and 3) will enable Ankara to revise its relations with the EU. Although Turkey is politically calm at the moment, the text’s author concludes that more political turmoil is on the horizon.
