The 2017 edition of CSS' Strategic Trends series includes four chapters on the current state and future direction of the Euro-Atlantic security system. The chapters specifically explore 1) how contested histories are complicating the rebuilding of trust in European security; 2) the possibility of Europe having to plan for a future in which the US is not only more skeptical about alliances and trade agreements, but also less willing to assume a leadership role in addressing international problems; 3) the requirement for France, Germany and the UK to continue working closely together on European defense issues in a post-Brexit environment; and 4) the serious strategic divergences NATO now faces, both within Europe and in its transatlantic relations, and what might be done to cope with them effectively.
