The African Union (AU) has developed several conflict prevention initiatives since its inception in 2002. Now, with the expectation of even more effective responses available in the future, this brief contends that the AU must reflect on the different roles it hopes to play and improve its ability to implement specific policies. To further these aims, the text’s author 1) assesses the AU’s current conflict prevention roles, initiatives and policies; 2) looks at the AU’s ‘Master Roadmap’, which is designed to mature the Union’s prevention capabilities; and 3) recommends additional capabilities enhancements.
