It’s simple, says this brief: The concept of sovereignty must be reinvented. Indeed, sovereign powers and functions are being taken over by public-private partnerships that involve both state and non-state actors. As a result, the nation-state’s monopoly on violence is waning, the distinctions between ‘simulated’ and ‘real’ sovereignty are fading, and new technologies, norms and means of governance are rising. Yes, it’s time to reinvent the ‘trademark’.
