This policy brief looks at South Africa’s waning commitment to promoting democracy and human rights across the African Continent. Early in the post-apartheid era, Pretoria did indeed set the norms for principled international engagement and interventions in Africa. Today, however, there are growing concerns about the country’s willingness to play this role, particularly since it has become more inward looking. The brief concludes by outlining why it would benefit South Africa to rekindle its role as a champion of peace and democracy.
