This paper analyzes the experiences and coping strategies of returning refugees in South Sudan. The problems they face are indeed familiar ones – i.e., a lack of food and water, physical security, education and jobs. Additionally, the “sustainability of return” largely depends on how well those who come back can access resources at their arrival location and thus secure a livelihood for themselves and their families. Given this truth, aid agencies should support income opportunities and early development programs at locations preferred by returnees.
