This paper looks at the details of the 18 March 2016 EU-Turkey Statement on Protection and Reception and the impact the deal is having on Greece. More specifically, the paper’s author 1) explores the fundamental notions of burden sharing and protection; 2) looks at the concept of the ‘safe third country’; 3) addresses the migration-related difficulties that have arisen since March 2016; and 4) outlines how the EU-Turkey deal led to the differentiation between nationalities and lowered both the “standards of reception” and the administrative capacity of the Greek asylum service.
