This study scrutinizes land tenure regimes, agricultural production and peasant responses in Sub-Saharan Africa. It interrogates Eurocentric notions of land tenure in Sub-Saharan Africa; highlights the authenticity of African systems of land tenure and social organization for agricultural production; describes how African producers have adapted to changing economic conditions, especially the introduction of the capitalist system and markets for agricultural commodities; reviews the behavior of African peasants; and evaluates the prospects for a genuine agrarian transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The author also describes the factors that underlie sub-Saharan Africa's declining agricultural productivity.
