This paper outlines a research proposal to assess care giving in South Africa. The proposal defines care broadly, taking into consideration services ranging from child care to disability care to elderly care. The research proposal suggests exploring what happens to individuals who are unable to care for themselves, and to what extent families and the state are able to assist.
