This paper critically reviews a selected number of time-use surveys from different regions and countries in order to assess their quality and to inform the design of qualitative research for the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) Political and Social Economy of Care project. Time-use surveys, sometimes called time-budget surveys, provide information on what activities people do over a given period of time (generally a day or a week), as well as how much time they spend on specific activities.
