This paper investigates the concept of sustainable development in the development discourse. It first looks at some of the interpretations, ambiguities and contradictions associated with the term. It then discusses attempts by mainstream international agencies to operationalize the concept of sustainable development, speculates to what degree sustainable development efforts have succeeded, and debates what might be done to contribute to more integrated and effective approaches to sustainable development.
