This paper discusses the evolution and application of the concept of sustainable development. It surveys unsustainable, long-term environmental trends and issues; explores local, national and global responses to environmental degradation and unsustainable development; and reflects on the search for strategic coherence. It argues that the biggest challenge facing participants to the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) is how to find and mobilize the social forces capable of bringing about necessary policy and institutional reforms.
