This paper considers the extent to which globalization and economic liberalization have affected inequality and poverty at both the global and country levels. It identifies methodological and data challenges, and concludes that while the effects of globalization and economic liberalization on inequality and poverty remain murky, a reasonable guess would be that researchers cannot be credited either with major positive or negative contributions at the world level. Their impact at the country-specific level, however, is likely more pronounced.
