This paper discusses the role of international organizations in combating economic inequality and poverty in an era of globalization. It reviews the evidence on growing inequality, looks at inequality transmission mechanisms, and reflects on the impact of policies advancing economic liberalization. In closing, it considers policies that would reduce inequality and gauges international consensus.
