This paper argues that the global South needs to secure greater autonomy in development policy-making, and discusses some of the factors involved in achieving this. It employs a political economy analysis in the historical context of decolonization and globalization. The author sets forth three key recommendations: a recognition of 'universality of diversity' in the formulation of economic policies, the exploitation of 'social knowledge' already inherent in societies, and the promotion of regional integration.
