This paper examines the reaction of civil society in Europe and North America to corporate power, and the emergence of a new corporate accountability movement. It discusses the origins and evolution of the modern corporation, and chronicles the failure of various national and international efforts to restrict the growth of corporate power during the 20th century. The paper concludes with a discussion on whether or not accomplishing greater corporate accountability would address the systemic problems associated with world development.
