This paper examines business regulation associated with corporate social responsibility (CSR) with a view to understanding its influence in business, civil society, governmental and multilateral circles. It also appraises CSR's potential to counter the effects of economic liberalization and corporate-led globalization, and reassert social control over markets. The author cautions against broad generalizations about the developmental trajectory of CSR, but notes that the major obstacles confronting CSR agendas are structural and political.
