This paper appraises corporate environmental and social behavior in India to better understand the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR). It furnishes a history of CSR in India, surveys CSR initiatives, and details the drivers of CSR in India. It concludes that the challenge remains to build a vibrant set of civil institutions capable of feeding the corporate community and their markets signals of success that orient companies toward good, not bad social and environmental practices.
