This paper examines the neoliberal discourse that dominates the debate on the role of the state, suggesting an alternative theoretical framework to overcome its limitations. It traces the evolution of the role of the state in the postwar period and the 21st century dominance of neoliberalism. The author questions assumptions underlying the neoliberal discourse on the role of the state, highlighting theoretical and practical problems. He argues that overcoming these entails developing a different framework, i.e. the institutionalist political economy. He concludes with an outline of the alternative framework and how its adoption can improve understanding the role of the state.
