This paper examines the changing relationships between labor-intensive industrial production and the conditions of reproduction of labor in South Africa from 1980-2000. The author argues that the conditions of reproducing labor are central to understanding South Africa's engagement with the global economy. She shows that a gendered perspective is crucial to understanding the relationships between industrial production, social policy and the conditions of reproduction of labor. The paper offers a comparative focus on the connections between production and the conditions of reproduction of labor, while shedding light on agrarian questions.
