This publication features a debate between two leading thinkers - José Casanova and Anne Phillips - on the relation between religion, politics and gender equality. Casanova argues that a public role for religion is compatible with democracy and gender equality in the context of a vibrant civil society where religious actors engage in open public debate on a range of common public concerns and issues. Phillips contends that religions most threaten gender equality when they are conceived of - and conceive themselves as - corporate bodies, capable of speaking with a unified voice.
