This paper uses gender-based data from China’s first national Time Use Survey (2008) to track the time allotted by Chinese citizens to paid work, unpaid work and non-work activities. The results confirms, by gender, that there is indeed a 'tension' between paid and unpaid work in China’s new market economy and that it deserves greater policy attention.
