This paper talks about the legislation passed by the Ethiopian government granting equality between men and women in land rights, and a land registration program that requires the names of both husbands and wives on certificates. The author examines the gendered impacts of these reforms through an analysis of three village-level case studies based on fieldwork conducted in 2009–2010. He argues that although land registration in Ethiopia has had some important, positive impacts on women’s land rights the case studies also show that gender inequality goes much deeper than just access to land.
