This paper looks at how the social and solidarity economy (SSE) discourse has been deployed at a regional level by the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and Southern American Common Market (MERCOSUR). It outlines the historical and cultural foundations of these SSE policies and reflects on some of the key tensions at play that could impede the advancement of the SSE sector.
