This brief discusses the factors that could be involved in the transformation of development cooperation brought about by the reduction in the importance of aid in this policy area. The authors first describe the situation in the field of development cooperation and then address some of the main areas where aid is decreasing in terms of its relative importance. They then outline a number of potential scenarios for the future of development cooperation and what the policy field must do to adapt to the challenges it faces in its period of transition.
