This paper examines Esping-Andersen’s Welfare Regimes Approach (WRA) to comparative social policy and subsequently provides an alternative way to assess and propose social policy. The author argues that the WRA is an approach that was informed by the conditions of the post-war boom and that as a consequence it was already out of date when it emerged in the 1990s. He then explains his own alternative approach, which he says combines developmental welfare state and public sector system of provision (PSSOP) approaches to social policy.
