This paper addresses the social and economic problems associated with payments for environmental services (PES) in developing countries. In particular, these transactions refer to payments to land owners whose land management practices help provide environmental services, such as water purification or regulation. The authors also provide recommendations on how to mitigate the potential adverse effects of PES.
