This paper examines the opportunities and challenges associated with engaging social movements and organizations in the policy-making and implementation process. Drawing on examples of social movements in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil, the author discusses how the ethos of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) practiced by social movements can be incorporated into state practices, as well as the problems that could arise where aspects of SSE are translated into state policy.
