This paper examines the challenges of expansion and sustainability of the social and solidarity economy (SSE), which includes organizations that have explicit economic and social features, and involve cooperative, associative and solidarity relations. It conducts this examination through an analysis of how organized groups of people who search through refuse for items that can be recycled for profit, known as the waste pickers movement, have affected public policies.
