This paper analyzes changes in China’s health policy and its accomplishments since the 1950s. The authors first review the historical development of China's health care system between the 1950s and the 1990s. They then examine the factors that have affected its reform since the 1990s, focusing on the politics, institutions and actors that led to the establishment of universal health coverage (UHC) in 2009. Finally, they discuss the impact of the establishment of UHC in China, the challenges still facing China's health care system, and the potential lessons of China's experience for other countries.
