This paper discusses the key role of civil society mobilization and political support that has led to the implementation of the UN principles of the right to work, the right to education and the right to food in India. The authors also examine the extent to which the right to social insurance and health care have been implemented by India and argue that both the country's social insurance system and its public health system remain limited in coverage and fragmented in character.
