This brief discusses a project carried out by UNRISD on UN World Summits and Civil Society Engagement between 2003 and 2005 to assess the way and extent to which different civil society actors used the opportunities created by UN summits and related processes. Among the issues discussed are the degree to which these events created a favorable political space at the national level that facilitated the further emergence and consolidation of civil society organizations (CSOs) and the range and quality of civil society activities.
