This paper discusses how poverty alleviation strategies and various forms of government intervention can affect the incidence of poverty, especially among women. The author describes the various concepts and definitions of poverty and the continued relevance of the income criterion in assessing time-trends. The paper focuses on the example of India, but explains that the analysis and conclusions may also have more general implications for other developing countries.
