This paper presents a social perspective of the environment problem with focus on natural resources and the rural sector and outlines an approach to resource conservation. It discusses indices of environmental stress and principal social consequences of environmental degradation. It furthermore outlines the traditional systems of resource management and their breakdown under colonial rule. The last section suggests an approach to conservation based on livelihood security and community empowerment.
