This paper assesses the social origins and impacts of deforestation in Brazil's Amazon region, as well as ideas regarding practical alternatives to deforestation. It analyzes causes as well as environmental and social impacts of deforestation and addresses existing and necessary social responses to this problem. Then it identifies different alternative forest or land use practices that have been adopted in the Amazon and usually focus on national policies and development strategies. The author concludes by raising questions for further research.
