This paper analyzes the economic and historical background of the informal sector in Nigeria. The authors consider the impact of the structural adjustment programs (SAP) on the class and gender composition of the informal sector, on the structure of informal sector demand and supply, on informal incomes, and on labor absorption. Further, they consider some strategies of informal actors at the household and the community levels. Finally, they attempt to draw out some of the social and policy implications of the findings.
