This report discusses social integration from the perspective of local urban groups living in the slums, squatter settlements and on the pavements of big cities. The paper focuses on sixteen case studies of cities around the world where volunteer contributions abound in slums and squatter settlements, despite of the vicious and precarious conditions. The authors state that the actions for group or social benefit, mostly unpaid, find a huge variety of expression, with some of the most outstanding examples involving women and mothers.
