This paper provides an in-depth examination of poverty assessments from a gender perspective in four sub-Saharan African countries. The author focuses particularly on the description and analysis of poverty in rural areas. The paper begins with an overview of the ways in which, and the extent to which, women and gender issues are present in the poverty assessments. The paper states that the overall picture is one of inconsistencies, fragmentation and gaps, both between the examples that are reviewed and within individual country reports.
