This paper provides a critical assessment of attempts to construct measurement mechanisms for gauging levels of female empowerment. The author explains how empowerment levels have traditionally been read by economists, demographers, sociologists and feminists. The paper discusses various methodological methods to help ensure that judgements and measurements of female empowerment are both informed and sensitive.
