This paper discusses Switzerland's language policy, asking how it handles its linguistic and cultural diversity, whether this is done successfully and what the respective strengths and weaknesses are. The paper reviews the historical foundations of Swiss multilingualism, outlines the corresponding institutional arrangements and identifies challenges that the country is confronted with. The paper argues that Switzerland represents a historical success in the management of linguistic diversity, yet, that globalization and socio-economic rifts pose new challenges.
